Mission Statement

The Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems (IRIS) is an interdepartmental institute between the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering (D-MAVT) and the Department of Health Sciences and Technology (D-HEST), conducting outstanding research and education at the forefront of robotics and its interdisciplinary applications. IRIS seeks to advance knowledge and technology in fields such as autonomous systems, vision- and touch-based perception, medical diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation, and promotes the transfer to industry and clinics. IRIS maintains strong collaborations across ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich with its affiliated hospitals, as well as with leading research centers, clinics and industry worldwide, and engages in national and international robotics initiatives.

IRIS is also strongly committed to education in the undergraduate and graduate programs of D-MAVT and D-HEST, taking a leading role in the specialized Master programs in Robotics, Systems and Controls and in Rehabilitation Engineering and Science. It organizes the Distinguished Seminar in Robotics, Systems and Control, an annual series of lectures by distinguished researchers from all over the world.
