Best Student Award for Europe at the EMBC2010
|
Olgac Ergeneman, a doctoral student at the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems in D-MAVT, received the Best Student Paper Award for Europe at the 32nd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC2010) held in Buenos Aires 31 Aug to 4 Sept 2010. His paper entitled “Oxygen Sensing Using Microrobots” also received Second Prize Overall. The prize is sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation. |

The Cyborg Fly Project - finalist of the National Instruments Robotics design award & article in IEEE Spectrum

The Cyborg Fly Project is a collaboration between the 'Fly Group' at ETH/University of Zurich, led by Stefen Fry and the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, Prof. Nelson's lab. The project was a finalist in the robotics cateogry at this year's Graphical System Design Achievement Awards, an event organized by National Instruments. Four awards & one finalist nomination at ICRA2010
|
At this year's ICRA2010, four awards go to IRIS-MSRL: the best student paper award for 'Non-Ideal Swimming of Artificial Bacterial Flagella Near a Surface', the best manipulation paper award for 'OctoMag: An Electromagnetic System for 5-DOF Wireless Micromanipulation' and two awards for the winning team of the ICRA2010 Robot Challenge. The video 'OctoMag: An Electromagnetic System for 5-DOF Wireless Manipulation' was nominated for the best video award. Congratulations to all. |

Strong boron-cotton indicates future promise
|
A joint research project between American and Chinese researchers, together with Prof. Brad Nelson and Dr. Lixin Dong, recently published a paper in "Advanced Materials" about cotton reinforced with boron carbide. The material is tough and hard but nonetheless elastic - but although these properties indicate future promise, it is not yet bulletproof. |
