Overview of the Multi-Scale Robotics Lab
The Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems pursues a dynamic research program that maintains a strong robotics research focus on several emerging areas of science and technology. A major component of IRIS research leverages advanced robotics for creating intelligent machines that operate at micron and nanometer scales. IRIS research develops the tools and processes required to fabricate and assemble micron sized robots and nanometer scale robotic components. Many of these systems are used for robotic exploration within biological domains, such as in the investigation of molecular structures, cellular systems, and complex organism behavior.

IRIS is strongly committed to supporting undergraduate and graduate education and offers a variety of courses that educate students in the fundamentals of experimental and theoretical robotics. The institute also offers advanced courses in robotic systems design and microrobotics.

The groundbreaking technologies developed at the IRIS MSRL have led to the formation of two startup companies, FemtoTools AG and Aeon Scientific AG. FemtoTools designs and manufactures ultra high prescision instruments for testing and handling in the micro and nanoscale domains. Aeon Scientific is developing next generation medical technologies based on electromagnetic manipulation.
