Oxygen sensing microrobots featured on the IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering Cover

Advanced Materials Cover 2012

A simple and general fabrication method for magnetic helical micromachines with or without claw-like protrusions is reported by S. Tottori, L. Zhang, F. Qiu, K.K. Krawczyk, A. Franco-Obregón and B.J. Nelson. The dynamics of motion control reveal that corkscrew motion can always be generated when the input frequency of the rotating magnetic field is sufficiently high. The micromachines exhibit excellent swimming behavior, low cytotoxicity, and are capable of 3D cargo transport in fluid. (More...).

The paper "Steerable Intravitreal Inserts for Drug Delivery: In Vitro and Ex Vivo Mobility Experiments" by Christos Bergeles, Michael P. Kummer, Bradley E. Kratochvil, Carsten Framme, and Bradley J. Nelson was a finalist for the Medical Robotics and CAI Systems Award at this year's MICCAI held in Toronto 18-22 September. Best Student Award for Europe at the EMBC2010

Olgac Ergeneman, a doctoral student at the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems in D-MAVT, received the Best Student Paper Award for Europe at the 32nd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC2010) held in Buenos Aires 31 Aug to 4 Sept 2010. His paper entitled “Oxygen Sensing Using Microrobots” also received Second Prize Overall. The prize is sponsored by the United States National Science Foundation.

The Cyborg Fly Project - finalist of the National Instruments Robotics design award & article in IEEE Spectrum

The Cyborg Fly Project is a collaboration between the 'Fly Group' at ETH/University of Zurich, led by Stefen Fry and the Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems, Prof. Nelson's lab. The project was a finalist in the robotics cateogry at this year's Graphical System Design Achievement Awards, an event organized by National Instruments. Das Video 'OctoMag: An Electromagnetic System for 5-DOF Wireless Manipulation' wurde für den Best Video Award als Finalist nominiert.

Starke Bor-Baumwolle

Amerikanische und Chinesische Forscher, zusammen mit Prof. Brad Nelson und Dr. Lixin Dong, publizierten vor kurzem ein Paper in der Zeitschrift "Advanced Materials", in dem sie eine neue Methode vorstellten, die aus einem gewöhnlichen Baumwoll-T-Shirt als Ausgangsmaterial ein zähes, hartes aber biegsames Gewebe macht. Obwohl dies ein grosses Potential für die Zukunft hat, ist das Material noch nicht kugelsicher.

Swiss Technology Award für Femtotools

Femtotools wurde 2007 als ETH Spin-Off gegründet. Zwei Jahre später hat eine hochkarätige Jury Femtotools als einer von drei Gewinnern (3. Rang) mit dem diesjährigen 'Swiss Technology Award' ausgezeichnet. Der STA ist der bedeutendste Technologiepreis in der Schweiz - es ist eine grosse Ehre und Motivation für Femtotools und das gesamte IRIS-Team. (Mehr Information)

Willkommen an Prof. Roland Siegwart & seine Gruppe und an das Zentrum für Produkt-Entwicklung

Prof. Roland Siegwart, EPFL wurde zum ordentlichen Professor für autonome Systeme an der ETH Zürich gewählt. Im Laufe des Jahres schliesst sich sein Autonomous System Lab offiziell mit dem IRIS zusammen. Er übernimmt ebenfalls die Leitung des Zentrums für Produkt-Entwicklung. Wir heissen beide Gruppen heute schon willkommen und freuen uns auf die zukünftige, enge Zusammenarbeit.
